When Jack finally finished it was 9:30 and the offices of Regency Software were completely empty. Of course one expects that on a Friday night.

Jack had thought about taking the manuals home and reading them at more leisure, but after his experience that morning he was a little afraid of going home. He had a limited supply of couch pillows, after all. And he was pretty sure there were no frozen peas anywhere here at Regency.

He was lucky that he’d always been a fast reader, and when reading for typos rather than content he was even faster. Just short of 2000 pages in just long of twelve hours, during which he’d come up with a number of cute typos along with the standard assortment of missing words.

He liked some of them. There was the directive in the Testing guide to “insert the selected teats at the end of the student’s queue” and the interesting image it conjured up. He especially liked “gross references to other guides” that he had written himself in the RMS admin doc, and was sad that “Appendix A, Interpreting Activity Coeds” was only a typo—he’d very much like some help interpreting women. Still, his favorite was the instruction to “Press [SHIT][F3] to continue.” It’s a good thing Schaefer hadn’t seen that one, or he might already have been canned.

Jack thought about going home, but at this point the only place scarier than Regency was his own living room. So he pulled up Solitaire on his computer to pass time and wind down a little.

Just before he fell asleep at his desk a half hour later he felt a familiar flush in his cheeks and got a throbbing headache that made the glowing computer screen seem to pulse with its own heartbeat.
